Canadian Tire Mitchell’s Bay Open
2018 Children’s Event
Each year the Canadian Tire Mitchell’s Bay Open Bass Tournament, the Mitchell’s Bay Area Association and its many volunteers host a Children’s Event with the help of our many generous sponsors. Only twenty (20) children chosen from the CK Municipal A.L.L. for Kids Program are given the opportunity to take part in this event which is held at the Mitchell’s Bay Marine Park starting at 10: 00 AM on Saturday morning (Day 2 of the tournament) and ends at approximately 3 PM. The children participate in an activities-based educational experience culminating with presentations up on the Canadian Tire Mitchell’s Bay Open Bass Tournament stage. The morning starts with each child receiving their own fishing equipment-rod, reel, tackle box and T-shirt. This is followed by a fishing experience out in Lake St-Clair on Pontoon Boats under the guidance of Boat Captains, Angler Coaches, Environmental Instructors and chaperones.
At lunch time the children are treated to a delicious barbecue and are given the opportunity to share their many fishing stories. This is followed by a bio diversity tour of Mitchell’s Bay area trails and wetlands (lead by Sydenham Field Naturalists) and a chance to see the anglers and the Live Release Boat in action as the weigh-ins are completed.
Parents are invited to join their children during the barbecue but it is not mandatory. They are also encouraged to join their children at the end of the day (2:15) to enjoy the children’s on-stage presentation and the tournament weigh-ins. At this time the children receive donated sporting equipment from our Children’s Event Sponsors Engie, Dajcor, Sport Chek and Al’s Lawn and Garden who help to make this event such a success.
The feedback (see below) we receive from the children and their parents plus the smiles on the faces of the children in the event pictures make this day well worth while!
“Everything about that day was wonderful. Volunteers were great with the kids and captains of the boats were very knowledgeable. My son’s only complaint was that he didn’t get to be out fishing longer. LOL. The stuff the kids received at the end to take home was more then generous. It was a pleasure to have him participate.”
“My two children were very lucky to be chosen to attend the bass fishing derby day!!! They had never fished or been on a boat before so they were excited . When we arrived everyone was very welcoming. I felt comfortable leaving the kids for their adventure day. Later in the afternoon, when I picked the kids up, I was blown away by the experience they both had. My daughter caught 4 fish and my son caught 1. They were so happy with themselves that they caught fish and rode on a boat. Plus to top it all off, they received a fishing pole, reel and tackle box. They also received other awesome gifts for their adventurous day! I want to say thank you to all that participated, volunteered and put together such a great day for my kids. Thank you so very much.”
“This was the most amazing experience my daughter had! She has always been scared of going in a boat and she did it! Her favourite part was trying to catch the fish (no she didn’t catch anything that day) thanks for this amazing opportunity! The next day she went fishing with her dad with her equipment! I found there program amazing my boys felt very privileged and can’t wait to take their new fishing gear out soon. Sure was a blessing. Thank you. I think what they are doing is amazing and it makes the kids feel good about themselves as well like they matter. Thanks again.”
“What an amazing day! My youngest daughter and I were watching everyone get ready to leave on the boats and she must have looked sad to be left behind as she was suddenly invited to join and ended up being included in the activities. I can’t thank everyone enough. What a positive experience for all the kids. The leaders where fun and engaging, kids were educated and inspired, lunch was delicious and the armful of goodies to take home was awesome! And now they’re hooked on fishing and I had to get my license so they could use their new poles and show me what they learned .
A lot of hard work went into this event….. thank you!!”
